Growing up in South Louisiana, my childhood was a symphony of vibrant, natural wonders. Picture a young boy perched beneath the canopy of a sprawling gumball tree, the sun filtering through its leaves, casting dappled shadows on the water below. The bayous were my playground, where I spent countless hours catching bass, sac-a-lait, and bream, or blasting squirrels from the tops of moss-covered cypress trees with a hand-me-down Browning A5. My early archery experiences were a blend of homemade bows and arrows, hand-crafted with all the care a 9-year-old could muster, along with the more structured pursuits of scouting and 4H. Archery was more of an idea than a passion at that time, but I look back at those early days with gratitude; the spark that ignited an inferno.
Life took a sharp turn when I joined the Air Force right out of high school, trading the humid, moss-draped swamps of Louisiana for the arid, wide-open spaces of New Mexico. The contrast was stark: the lush green of home replaced by the golden hues of desert and sagebrush. Here, I encountered the allure of western big game hunting. Elk, antelope, and oryx, creatures I had only seen on the outdoor channel, roamed these lands. Though I didn't draw a tag then, a new spark ignited within me, one that would grow into a burning passion.
After two and a half years in the high desert, Uncle Sam relocated my family and me to Montgomery, Alabama. Returning to the South felt like coming home to a warm embrace. One pivotal day, I found myself in the local Bass Pro shop, my eyes on a sleek Savage .270 rifle. My wife, ever the voice of reason, questioned the need for another gun with our house soon to be filled with the curious fingers of our two-year-old and infant twins. We decided to delay the purchase and wandered into the archery section, where the rows of compound bows caught my eye. I chatted with the bow technician, dreaming aloud about the possibility of owning one someday.
That simple exchange set off a chain reaction. My wife, knowing my deep-rooted desire to hunt again, took it upon herself to rekindle that flame. A few weeks before Christmas, I came home to find a bow-shaped gift under our tree. It was a PSE Stinger, my first real bow. The Christmas of 2011 remains etched in my memory as the best ever, a turning point that steered my life onto a new path. I couldn't wait to return to Bass Pro to have my bow set up, my excitement palpable.
The joy of that Christmas marked the beginning of a profound transformation. As I delved deeper into the world of archery, it evolved from a hobby into a passion, and eventually, a mission. This journey culminated in the founding of ENDEX Archery, a non-profit dedicated to providing archery equipment, education, and mentorship to military veterans, law enforcement officers, firefighters, first responders, and individuals grappling with trauma or PTSD.
ENDEX Archery was born from personal necessity. On December 21, 2015, while deployed to Afghanistan, six members of my team were killed in a suicide bombing. The weight of that loss was immense, casting a long shadow over my mental health. Archery became my sanctuary, my therapy, a way to manage the stress and trauma that threatened to engulf me. I experienced firsthand the healing power of archery and felt compelled to share this medicine with others.
Our mission at ENDEX Archery is to harness the therapeutic benefits of archery—enhancing focus, mindfulness, and the mind-body connection—to aid in the recovery of those dealing with PTSD. Archery demands discipline, focus, and clarity, mirroring the attributes required in military service. This makes it a natural fit for veterans and first responders seeking relief from their mental burdens.
Through ENDEX Archery, we provide structured programs that foster a sense of community and offer a safe space for individuals to heal and rebuild their lives. We've partnered with various organizations in the archery industry and hosted events to support our cause and raise awareness for our mission. Thanks to the generosity of our donors and supporters, we’ve been able to provide over 30 heroes with the archery equipment they need to begin their journeys.
